INTUITIVE ATTUNEMENT · THE FOUNDATIONS | TEACHING 01

Universal and individuated. Infinite in scope and personal in experience.

A man looks out at the city from a balcony while an energetic field of dotted concentric circles emanates from him

The Central Premise:

Intuition is within the self and beyond the self simultaneously. It is universal in nature, yet individuated in expression. Infinite in scope and personal in experience. Everywhere, yet accessible through the direct awareness of a person’s consciousness. Intuition is not something we must acquire. It is always already present. What we cultivate through intuitive practice is our conscious capacity to orient to, recognize, engage with, discern, and trust what is already there.

Core Learning:

This first foundational teaching introduces four essential understandings:

  1. Intuition is always already present. Its existence is not dependent upon our conscious awareness or acknowledgment of it.

  1. Intuition is an ordinary human capacity. Every person has the innate ability and opportunity to cultivate a conscious relationship with intuition.

  1. Cultivating a relationship with intuition is a personal choice. It’s neither obligatory nor necessary to justify one's existence.

  1. Intuition is uniquely experienced. Its expression and recognition are personal, making direct experience and discernment essential.

Together, these principles establish the nature of intuition and the premise of Intuitive Attunement.

A note on language: You'll find expanded descriptions of specific words and terms in the Definitions section at the end of this article.

✤ Intuition Is Universal and Individuated

From a multidimensional perspective, intuition is not confined to the physical boundaries of the human self. It exists within and beyond individuated consciousness simultaneously. It is universal (everywhere) and localized (here, now). In my own experience, intuition is an expression of an infinite, loving intelligence that is aware of the individual human self, just as the individual human self has the capacity to become aware of that greater intelligence.

The totality and the individuation are simultaneously observer and observed. You could even say that they are one, unified.

This is a relationship of mutual awareness, rather than being one-directional. Intuitive information does not always travel from an external source to a passive human recipient, although it can and does. The individual is an active participant in a larger field of awareness, capable of not only receiving intuitive information serendipitously, but also of consciously directing attention toward it, becoming familiar with it, and mutually engaging with it.

I often refer to this larger field, this universality, as the Infinite Wellspring of Loving Intelligence. I also short-hand it to the field of loving intelligence or the field, even if these two phrases don’t capture its fullest essence.

When I bring my awareness to it, I experience it as an ever-expansive, ever-giving, resource of guidance, reflection, insight, inspiration, wisdom, and teaching that is perpetually flowing. It’s L-O-V-E on tap. And there’s no closing time. Mentioning its characteristic infinite-wellspring-ness is absolutely relevant.

Other language I use includes Source, God, Love, Higher Self, and Spirit (depending on what I’m perceiving in the moment, because that too has flexibility).

These expressions are not right or wrong, and they’re not necessarily interchangeable in every context. They offer different points of access to aspects of universal consciousness and personal intuitive experience that ordinary human language can struggle to describe. I have no claim on, nor any attachment to, these words and their meaning. I always suggest that a person determine their own authentic language for describing their own inner experience with intuition.

To put it plainly, my non-dual understanding of intuition encompasses two interconnected dimensions:

  1. The universal dimension: The greater field of loving intelligence from which intuitive information, guidance, insight, and wisdom may be experienced.

  2. The individuated dimension: The human capacity to perceive, recognize, receive, consciously engage with, and channel/communicate/express intuitive information.

Both are integral to my understanding of intuition.

The first points to the greater field of intuition.

The second points to our personal relationship with it.

And it is within this relationship that intuitive attunement takes place.

✤ The Sun Does Not Disappear Behind the Clouds

Consider the sun.

When clouds obscure the sky, we may no longer see it. Yet the sun has not disappeared. The sun’s ever-presence is not dependent upon our ability to perceive it.

Intuition behaves in much the same way.

Intuition does not suddenly come into existence when we become aware of it. Intuition is not manifested. Nor does it cease to exist when we are distracted, behaving unconsciously, skeptical of it, absorbed in physical reality, or unable to recognize its presence. We can go an entire lifetime, even entire lifetimes, having no interest in it or awareness of it. And yet, it continues to exist, available to anyone, available to everyone.

What changes is our capacity for conscious recognition of it, inspired by our desire or choice to engage it.

This is an important distinction because it challenges several common assumptions about intuition:

  • That intuition must first be developed before it can be experienced

  • That intuition is something “gifted” to a select blessed and lucky few (and therefore not available to all)

Intuition is always already present. The individual human self has an opportunity, an invitation, and the innate ability to cultivate greater receptivity to it and familiarity with it. Or not.

When clouds obscure the sky, we may no longer see the sun, but we know it’s still there. We can even still feel its warmth and be aware of its radiant light. This is the same with intuition. We can learn to recognize what has been ever-present all along.

Recognition of intuition does not necessarily require an extraordinary experience - although that does happen. It’s not dependent on the clouds to magically part and a double rainbow to appear.

Instead, it can begin with directing one’s attention to a subtle knowing, an unexpected insight, a low-key impression, or a moment of awareness that might otherwise have passed unnoticed. The invitation is not to manufacture or create an intuitive experience out of sheer willpower. It is to become increasingly more conscious of, or attuned to, the intuitive experiences already occurring.

✤ Intuition Is an Ordinary Human Capacity

Intuition is frequently portrayed as an isolated, extraordinary gift possessed by a select few.

Some people describe having vivid intuitive experiences, spontaneous downloads of profound insights, psychedelic visions, or phenomenal perceptions that appear to extend beyond ordinary sensory awareness. Others experience intuition more subtly, grounded, or in ways they live their daily life that may not be immediately recognizable.

Neither of these intuitive receptivity styles inherently equates to “better intuition”.

To the contrary, intuition is an ordinary human capacity, although the ways people perceive and engage with it can and do differ considerably.

One person may experience intuitive information through bodily sensation and somatic sensory perception. Another persona may be receptive through imagery, language, or an uneventful sense of knowing. And yet another might recognize intuitive awareness through patterns of experience that become meaningful over time.

There is no single way of intuiting that everyone must learn to reproduce. There is just YOU, and your way of intuiting.

This matters because expectations can interfere with a person’s recognition of their own intuition.

When someone assumes intuition should arrive as a dramatic vision, unmistakable message, a lightning strike, or extraordinary event, they may overlook subtler forms of awareness already present in their experience. Or they may not look at all, telling themselves, “I must not be intuitive” simply because their experience does not resemble someone else's.

There is also no single protocol for a personal intuitive practice that must be religiously adhered to.

When someone assumes intuition can only be accessed through hours-long meditation, days-long fasting, plant medicine ceremonies, or other elaborate practices, they may become dependent on external methods and conditions rather than recognizing their innate capacity for intuitive awareness.

Intuition is not dependent on performance. It’s not a competition. Your relationship with your own intuition is not established through intensity of experience or comparison to others. Your intuitive experience is uniquely yours to recognize, explore, discern, and articulate.

This does not mean that every feeling, impression, or spontaneous thought should automatically be treated as intuitive guidance. It means that gaining familiarity with your own intuition and the way it works for you is a more useful starting point than attempting to replicate someone else's.

✤ Where Does Intuitive Information Come From?

Does intuition originate within us, or does it come from beyond us?

In my experience, both possibilities are relevant.

Intuitive information can arise through the direct conscious engagement of it by the individuated human self. It can also be experienced as prompted, inspired, initiated, or emphasized by the infinite wellspring of loving intelligence. Sometimes an insight feels entirely internal. At other times, it seems to arrive from beyond one's personal conscious awareness. And sometimes the distinction is difficult to make, and we might wonder if it matters at all.

As a person cultivates a relationship with their own intuition and gains greater familiarity with it, the perceived location of intuitive information may become increasingly flexible. The relationship between the individuated human self and the field of loving intelligence can feel less divided, more fluid.

This brings us back to the relationship between observer and observed.

The human being is not simply observing intuition as something separate from the self. Instead, individuated consciousness participates in a greater totality that is simultaneously aware of the individual. In this sense, intuitive engagement is mutual. There is individual awareness of the greater field of loving intelligence, and awareness within that greater field of the individual.

From a human perspective, we might express this more simply:

  • Sometimes intuition feels like something we know, personally.

  • Sometimes it feels like something we are being shown, outwardly.

  • And sometimes the experience contains elements of both.

  • Neither is better or worse.

We do not need to determine the ultimate source of every intuitive impression before exploring its significance. But neither should we assume that the apparent source of an impression guarantees its accuracy.

The experience of perceiving intuitive information and the interpretation of that information remain distinct. They are two different participatory processes.

This is where discernment becomes essential.

✤ Why Intuitive Attunement Rather Than Intuitive Development?

Language can shape how we understand and approach a practice.

The phrase intuitive development is familiar and widely used – I’ve even used it myself. Yet it can suggest that intuition itself is an undeveloped ability within the individual, something that must be generated, strengthened, built, or acquired. That is not the premise from which I teach.

I use the term Intuitive Attunement nowadays because it more accurately describes the relationship we are cultivating:

  • Intuition is already present.

  • What develops is our conscious capacity to attune to it: recognize it, engage with it, understand how it presents itself, discern its relevance within our lives, and articulate it in our lives and work.

We are not self-creating or building intuition. We are not necessarily making intuition stronger.

But you could say we are strengthening our recognition of it. We are becoming more consciously familiar with it. We are choosing to bring attention to something that already exists, and therefore amplifying our awareness of it.

Another way of understanding this is through the distinction between acquisition and relationship. Acquisition assumes there is something missing that must be obtained. Relationship begins with the recognition that something is already present and available for conscious engagement.

The distinction changes the way we engage with intuition.

When we approach intuition as something we lack and need to acquire, we may become preoccupied with techniques, extraordinary experiences, or external confirmation that we are sufficiently intuitive.

When we approach intuition as something already present, our attention can shift toward awareness, recognition, direct experience, and familiarity. The emphasis moves from becoming someone who possesses intuition to becoming someone who consciously participates in a relationship with it, or not.

And this has significant implications for personal sovereignty.

A person does not need to surrender authority to a teacher, practitioner, guru, preacher, or external source to establish a relationship with their own intuitive experience. While teachers and structured practices can provide valuable learning opportunities and guidance, they should always support a person's own intuition and growing capacity for recognition, discernment, and conscious choice - not replace it.

The aim of cultivating a relationship with one’s own intuition is not subservience to, or dependence upon, intuition as an unquestionable authority. It is a conscious, responsible, increasingly familiar, and trustworthy relationship with intuition.

✤ Your Relationship with Intuition Is Uniquely Yours

Although intuition is universal in nature, its expression to and through the individuated consciousness, the human self, is personal and unique, like a snowflake.

The field of loving intelligence may be infinite in scope, but the human experience of it is particular to self.

You perceive through your own personal consciousness matrix: mind, body, spirit, emotion, history, biases, attention, and present-day capacity for awareness. You also have your own receptivity style to intuitive information which could include any of the following:

  • knowing

  • seeing

  • hearing

  • sensing

  • feeling

  • somatics

  • symbolism

  • spontaneous understanding

  • dreams

  • synchronicities

  • vibration/frequency

  • loads of other stuff

Your relationship with your own intuition will therefore have experienced and perceived qualities that are distinctly your own.

This individuality is not only brilliant, but also something to become familiar with and more adept at articulating. Nobody can fully know, grasp, or affirm your own unique way of intuiting but you.

This means that the particular way you perceive intuitive information and your own distinct intuitive receptivity style will be unlike anyone else’s, and vice-versa. Getting caught up in comparing yourself to others is futile. Thinking you should be intuitive like so-and-so practitioner is unrealistic. Expecting affirmation, praise, or acknowledgment from external sources saying “Yes, you’re doing it right!” delays self-recognition now.

It’s your job to know yourself. Deeply and comprehensively. There’s no other way.

✤ From Intuitive Awareness to Intuitive Relationship

If intuition is already present, what are we cultivating through a personal intuitive attunement practice?

A conscious and ethical relationship.

And like any meaningful relationship, familiarity and trust develop through consistent engagement over time.

My approach to Intuitive Attunement demonstrates the progression of how intuition becomes consciously accessible and how intuitive capacity expands and evolves: Orientation → Agency → Attention → Attunement → Engagement → Familiarity → Discernment → Trust

  • Orientation concerns the fundamental quality of love, the highest desired frequency, and the utmost benevolent intention we bring to intuitive engagement.

  • Agency allows us to participate consciously and utilize our free will to choose how we direct our awareness.

  • Attention establishes the focus through which we begin recognizing intuitive experience.

  • Attunement describes our growing receptivity and familiarity with that experience.

  • Engagement makes the relationship participatory and mutual rather than passive.

  • Familiarity develops through repeated experience and reflection.

  • Discernment allows us to actively, sovereignly, and agentically distinguish experience, perception, and interpretation from meaning-making and conclusion.

  • Trust emerges naturally through dedication to orientation, consistent practice, familiarity, discernment, and integration.

Although these elements can be practiced sequentially, they are not a rigid “To Do” list of achievements to cross off. They are interconnected aspects of an evolving relationship, each influencing and informing the others.

And trust does not mean unquestioning certainty.

It means developing a relationship with intuition that can accommodate uncertainty, dialogue, reflection, inquiry, self-responsibility, and choice.

In my upcoming posts, we'll explore these elements individually and examine how they work together.

For now, the foundational understanding is this:

Intuition is always already present. The practice is learning to recognize it, attune to it, and consciously participate in the relationship.

🔗 INTEGRATION - What Have We Established?

The essential understanding:

Intuition is both universal in nature and individuated in expression.

Within the framework of Intuitive Attunement, intuition is already present. What we cultivate is our conscious relationship with it.

Three distinctions are worth carrying forward:

  1. Presence does not equate to recognition. Intuition may be present without being consciously perceived.

  2. Universal presence, individual expression. Your intuitive experience is unique and unlike anyone else's.

  3. Mutuality, not obedience. Intuition invites conscious relationship, active participation, and sovereign engagement.

For your own reflection:

Consider the following:

  • What assumptions have you held about where intuition originates or how it should present itself?

  • Have you ever dismissed an experience because it did not match your expectations of intuition?

  • What changes when you approach intuition as something already present rather than something you must acquire?

You do not need to reach a particular conclusion. Allow the questions to inspire curiosity about your own experience. The purpose of an intuitive attunement practice is not to persuade yourself that every impression is intuitive. It is to become increasingly more conscious, discerning, and familiar with your own relationship with intuition.

🔎 DEFINITIONS

Consciousness Matrix — The unique, interconnected configuration of an individual's mind, body, spirit, emotions, including personal history, beliefs, perceptions, and levels of awareness through which they experience and interpret reality. Within Intuitive Attunement, this matrix is not fixed; it can evolve and transform through conscious practice, expanding the individual's capacity to perceive, engage with, and integrate multidimensional awareness and intuitive information.

Individuation / Individuated Consciousness — Individuation refers to the expression of universal consciousness through a distinct individual identity and perspective. Individuated consciousness is the personal awareness through which a human being experiences, interprets, and participates in existence. Although experienced as individual, it remains interconnected with the greater field of loving intelligence.

Infinite Wellspring of Loving Intelligence — My term for the universal, inexhaustible field of loving intelligence that I experience as an ever-present source of intuitive information, guidance, insight, inspiration, love, wisdom, and support. It is not separate from individuated consciousness but exists within and beyond it, allowing for mutual awareness and conscious engagement.

Intuition — An ever-present aspect of universal consciousness that can be experienced through the individuated human self. Within my methodology, intuition encompasses both the universal field of loving intelligence and the individual's innate capacity to perceive, recognize, consciously engage with, and articuate intuitive information. Intuition is not something we acquire; it is already present and available for conscious relationship.

Intuitive Attunement — The conscious cultivation of an increasingly familiar, discerning, and ethical relationship with intuition that is already present. My methodology emphasizes eight interconnected elements: Orientation, Agency, Attention, Attunement, Engagement, Familiarity, Discernment, and Trust. Through consistent practice, this relationship can expand intuitive capacity and transform the individual's conscious awareness and way of being.

Intuitive Capacity — The individual's innate ability to consciously perceive, recognize, engage with, discern, and express intuitive information. Through consistent practice, intentional orientation, and conscious participation, this capacity can expand and evolve, transforming the individual's field of awareness and their mind-body-spirit-emotion matrix to accommodate increasingly multidimensional experiences and understanding.

Localized — Refers to something experienced or expressed through a particular, focused point of awareness, such as an individual human consciousness, in a specific moment. Although intuition is universal in nature, its perception and expression are localized through the unique consciousness, awareness, and experience of the individual.

Multidimensional — Refers to an understanding of existence and consciousness that extends beyond the physical, sensory, and material dimensions of human experience. Within Intuitive Attunement, multidimensional awareness includes the capacity to perceive and engage with non-physical information, intelligence, and aspects of consciousness beyond ordinary sensory perception.

Non-dual — Describes an understanding of existence in which apparent distinctions, such as self and other, individual and universal, or observer and observed, do not represent absolute separation, but exist in simultaneity. Within my understanding of intuition, individuated consciousness and universal consciousness can be distinct in expression yet fundamentally interconnected aspects of a greater unified totality.

Universal / Universality / Totality — Refers to that infinite expansiveness which exists beyond the boundaries of any single individual, location, or personal experience. Within my understanding of intuition, universality describes the all-encompassing nature of the greater field of consciousness and loving intelligence, which is not limited to any particular person or expression.
